So I've been tossing around this idea in my head for a few weeks now, of opening a "luxury" cat hotel. By luxury, I mean that they wouldn't be stuffed into tiny metal kennels all day right next to a bunch of barking dogs. My idea is to build (either in a separate location or onto part of my home) large, welcoming "kennels" with ledges to jump on, washable beds to lay on, and toys to play with, and to have the entire place decorated in cheery colors with cat-friendly decor. I have a lot of experience giving medication, and now I know how to use the pet razor for grooming (sort of)! Things holding me back are:
-I'm not sure if there would be enough of a market (since a lot of people just leave their cats at home when they travel)
-My current home isn't zoned for commercial use
-I don't want to get a loan until I've paid down some of my current debt (in case the business fails)
-I've never run a business before
I went to a seminar on starting your own business at the local Small Bus Dev Association, but that's as far as I've gone. If anyone out there has been in my situation (ignorant and broke) but has still managed to start a kennel operation (particularly a cattery), I'd love to hear your advice. Email me!
Welcome!
This blog was created in honor of Khan, the Warrior Cat, to provide his fans with updates and information on his progress. Khan was rescued by Shadow Cats in Round Rock, Texas in 2006, after being hit by a car and found wandering the highway. He underwent several surgeries performed by Dr. Roy Smith at the Central Texas Cat Hospital to restore his smashed jaw, remove his damaged eye, and restore mobility. He still had damaged ears from years of infections, neurological problems, only two teeth, and spinal injuries that affected his gait, but he had a great spirit. He got to know many people, and many others heard his story, during the time he stayed at Shadow Cats and the two years during which we were blessed to have him in our home. This blog is dedicated to them, to all of those involved in his rescue, and to anyone who has helped a cat in desperate need.
