He is out of surgery and awake, and his breathing tube has been removed!
They’re warming him right now in a temperature-controlled area.
The surgery went "very well." They said that once they got in there, the middle ear looked very good, which means the infections hadn’t gotten that far. But the outer canal was pretty blocked with that mass (polyp) that was keeping us from being able to treat the ear. They are treating him with an antibiotic right now just to make sure they get rid of all the bacteria (in case any remained in his ear); while strong, it is not an antibiotic that will hurt his kidneys.
At my request, they took some digital photos during surgery, which they will be sending to me. If they aren't too graphic, I will post them later.
They also mentioned that the CT scan showed fluid in the right side ear canal, and they said there is a very small chance that ear could need surgery in the future, but it is more likely we can treat it topically. (We have not been doing anything for that ear up to this point.)
They are going to call me later this afternoon with an update on his recovery--but everything looks good so far! I can't wait until we can bring him home.
Welcome!
This blog was created in honor of Khan, the Warrior Cat, to provide his fans with updates and information on his progress. Khan was rescued by Shadow Cats in Round Rock, Texas in 2006, after being hit by a car and found wandering the highway. He underwent several surgeries performed by Dr. Roy Smith at the Central Texas Cat Hospital to restore his smashed jaw, remove his damaged eye, and restore mobility. He still had damaged ears from years of infections, neurological problems, only two teeth, and spinal injuries that affected his gait, but he had a great spirit. He got to know many people, and many others heard his story, during the time he stayed at Shadow Cats and the two years during which we were blessed to have him in our home. This blog is dedicated to them, to all of those involved in his rescue, and to anyone who has helped a cat in desperate need.
